Some days can be really frustrating. I know
Days like that don’t always need fixing. They need softening.
I have come to understand that the day doesn’t always have to be held together by loud moments. Sometimes, it is the silence. Other times, it is waking up and kicking your sibling because what else is sibling rivalry? The little favours we offer that lift our spirits up.
Here are some of the rituals that I used to pamper my day;
- I let the morning be what it wants to. I am not rushing. No pressure. I listen to the hum of the day breaking, sipping a cold cup of tea. I spill some ‘tea’ with my sister.
- I choose a playlist. This depends on what I want to do. Usually, jazz is when I have to work. These sounds have a way of rearranging the air/vibe in the room, and deliberately choosing for yourself is even better.
- I sing out loud. I dance to the rhythm of my off-key. I let the music fill me up. I let myself forget things and let my inner child play. Yes, I goof around.
- Find beauty in ordinary things. Personally, I like the view from my balcony. There are birds in the blue sky. The way the clouds form. These moments are just waiting to be noticed. They are not loud.
- Be your audience. I write for you. A few lines in my journal. It doesn’t have to go anywhere. It doesn’t have to be polished. Just hearing my own voice.
- End my day gently. I try not to stress about the unfinished projects of the day. I light some scented candles. Put my phone away and let the day go.
These rituals don’t promise a productive day or clarity. Neither is it aimed at changing my life overnight. But they do something important for me: they make the day feel livable.
Sometimes, that softness is enough. And that’s a win.
